Absence Policy

Illinois Tech expects all students to attend courses regularly. When illness or emergency requires a student to miss an exam/and or more than two days of class, the student must notify the course instructor. In extenuating circumstances, the dean of students can advocate on behalf of the student to request an excused absence.

Drug-Free Schools and Community Act

Illinois Institute of Technology (Illinois Tech) is a private, technology-focused research university located in the historic Bronzeville neighborhood of Chicago. Illinois Tech strives to utilize the global city of Chicago in promoting innovation, research, entrepreneurship, and education for its students. Illinois Tech offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in engineering, science, architecture, business, design, human sciences, computer science, applied technology, and law.

The Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988 and the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act Amendments of 1989 require an institution of higher education, as a condition of receiving funds or any other form of financial assistance under any federal program, to certify that it has adopted and implemented a drug prevention program to prevent the unlawful possession, use, or distribution of illicit drugs and alcohol by students and employees. Illinois Tech fully supports the objectives of these laws. As part of its drug prevention program for students and employees, Illinois Tech annually provides the following information to the university community:

  1. Standards of conduct that clearly prohibit the unlawful possession, use, or distribution of illicit drugs and alcohol by students and employees on its property or as part of any of its activities
  2. A description of the applicable legal sanctions under local, state, or federal law for the unlawful possession or distribution of illicit drugs and alcohol
  3. A description of the health risks associated with the use of illicit drugs and the abuse of alcohol
  4. A description of available drug and alcohol counseling, treatment, or rehabilitation or reentry programs
  5. A clear statement of the disciplinary sanctions that the University will impose on students and employees who violate the standards of conduct

Illinois Tech, through the coordinated efforts of the Dean of Students Office and Department of Human Resources, conducts biennial reviews of its drug and alcohol abuse prevention programs to determine their effectiveness, implement changes as needed, and ensure that the disciplinary sanctions are consistently enforced.

Illinois Tech recognizes both alcohol and drug abuse as a potential health, safety, and security problem. Illinois Tech expects its students and employees to cooperate in maintaining a campus environment free from the effects of alcohol and other drugs and to comply with this policy.

If you would like access to the Biennial Review, please email conduct@iit.edu.

Meal Plan Accommodation Forms

Meal plan changes should be discussed with a member of the Office of Residence Life team before any changes will be considered. Students that are requesting accommodations due to a medical or religious need may contact housing@iit.edu or dos@iit.edu to receive the appropriate accommodation forms.

Reporting a Concern

Illinois Tech acknowledges that during a student's college experiences, they are instances where our students will express issues sometimes within and outside of their concern. These issues can be academic, based on overwhelming personal circumstances, disruptions in their education, and illnesses. These stressors can impact a student’s educational experience. We encourage all students, faculty, and staff to understand the resources that are available at Illinois Tech. As a student, staff, and/or faculty member, you can let the university know when you are concerned about a student’s well-being.

If you would like to report a concern about a student’s well-being, there are multiple ways to let the Student Support Team know about your concern.

Submit an Incident Report

Incident reports are reports that are made by a student, faculty, staff, and or community member concerned about an Illinois Tech community member, information about a possible violation of the Student Code of Conduct, or a possible case of sexual misconduct.

Email: Contact the Dean of Students Office at dos@iit.edu.

Student Complaints

Participants in Title IV Federal Financial Aid under the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended, are required to direct students to a state agency for assistance with unresolved complaints as well as their accreditor. In Illinois, the relevant state agency for assistance with unresolved complaints is the Illinois State Board of Higher Education (IBHE). Per IBHE, institutions of higher education are to direct individuals to the IBHE online complaint system at complaints.ibhe.org/, accessible through the agency’s homepage (www.ibhe.org). The IBHE online complaint site includes step-by-step instructions and key information about the complaint process. Illinois Institute of Technology’s accreditor is The Higher Learning Commission, and information on its complaint process can be at www.hlcommission.org/Student-Resources/complaints.html.
