David Lampert

The Department of Food Science and Nutrition presents its spring 2024 seminar series featuring guest speaker David Lampert, assistant professor in the Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering at Illinois Institute of Technology, who will give a presentation on “Fate, Transport, and Bioaccumulation of Per and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances in the Environment.” This seminar will take place on Thursday, February 8, from 12:45–1:45 p.m. in room 111 of the Pritzker Science Center.

Abstract

The widespread existence of per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the environment represents an emerging issue due to their stability, bioaccumulation potential, and risks to human and ecological well-being. Areas where PFAS have been released into the environment now pose bioaccumulation risks. One approach for risk reduction is to contain the contamination in-situ to prevent exposure. This presentation will present ongoing research into the efficacy of PFAS remediation using sediment capping technologies and other research analyzing PFAS migration from contaminated groundwater to surface water.

Bio

David Lampert is an assistant professor in the Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering at Illinois Institute of Technology. He holds a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Oklahoma State University, an M.S. in Environmental and Water Resources Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. He previously worked as a tenure-track faculty member at Oklahoma State University and a staff scientist at Argonne National Laboratory, where he studied the interactions between energy and water resources. In addition to his academic background, Lampert has professional experience as a consulting engineer for design of municipal wastewater treatment and reuse facilities and as a pollution control specialist. Lampert’s current research interests include emerging water pollution issues and integration of food, water, energy, and environmental systems to enhance their sustainability using new technologies and policies. He teaches classes on pollutant fate and transport, water resources engineering, and global sustainability.
