Illinois Tech and Rust College Joint Panel Discussion on Data Science
Join faculty from Illinois Institute of Technology and Rust College for an online panel discussion "What is Data Science, and Why Is Important?"
Moderated by Shlomo Argamon, Illinois Tech professor of computer science and Department of Computer Science chair, the panel will cover topics such as data science in education, ethics, data science and mathematical modeling, data science systems and information technology functions, as well as the skills and knowledge needed to success in a data science career.
Panelists will include Yuhan Ding, Boris Glavic, Timothy Rich, and Yong Zheng with an introduction by Rolundus Rice, vice president of Rust College.
Registration is free and open to students, prospective students, and industry partners.

Rolundus R. Rice serves as the Vice President of Academic Affairs and Chief Academic Officer at Rust College in Holly Springs, Mississippi

Shlomo Argamon
Shlomo Argamon is professor and chair of Illinois Tech’s Department of Computer Science and founder of the university’s Master of Data Science Program. He received his B.Sc. in Applied Mathematics from Carnegie-Mellon (1988) and his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Yale University (1994), where he was a Fannie and John Hertz Foundation Fellow, and held a Fulbright Postdoctoral Fellowship at Bar-Ilan University (1994-96). He is a Fellow of the British Computer Society. His research focuses on developing computational methods for style-based analysis of natural language using machine learning and shallow lexical semantic representations, exploring applications in intelligence analysis, forensic linguistics, biomedical informatics, and humanities scholarship.

Yong Zheng received a Ph.D. in Computer and Information Sciences from DePaul University, Chicago, in 2016. He currently is an assistant professor at Illinois Tech’s Department of Information Technology and Management. His research interests lie in user modeling, personalization, and recommender systems. He has been active in professional services, and was engaged in the organization of conferences related to the area of user modeling and recommender systems.
Boris Glavic is an associate professor in the Department of Computer Science at Illinois Institute of Technology leading Illinois Tech’s DBGroup. His research spans several areas of database and data science including data provenance, data integration, query execution and optimization, uncertain data, and data curation. Glavic strives to build systems that are based on solid theoretical foundations.

Tim Rich has taught computer science and mathematics at Rust College since 2000.
Recently, he has been teaching physics as well. His interests include computer
programming, simulations, and all things science.
Yuhan Ding earned her Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Illinois Institute of Technology in 2015 and is currently the program director for the Master of Data Science program and senior lecturer of applied mathematics at Illinois Institute of Technology. Her research interest lie in computational mathematics: function approximation, computational complexity, modeling and data analysis, statistical learning, data mining, and machine learning. Ding is active in professional services and is a sought-after presenter for her expertise in guaranteed automatic numerical algorithms for univariate approximation.
