The Department of Mechanical, Materials, and Aerospace Engineering will welcome Jon Zeman, principal engineer and application team lead for vehicle systems integration at Gamma Technologies, for a lecture titled “Introduction to System Engineering and GT-SUITE” on Wednesday, March 8, from 3:30–4:30 p.m. in Room 104 of the John T. Rettaliata Engineering Center. 

Abstract

Systems engineering plays an extremely important role in our everyday lives. But what is it, exactly? How can system engineering principles be applied in a real-world scenario? In this seminar, Jon Zeman from Gamma Technologies will give an introduction to this important and often overlooked discipline, with real-world examples of how systems engineering can be applied within different industries such as mobility and transportation, aerospace, HVACR, and even medical devices.

This seminar will also introduce the engineering simulation software capabilities of GT-SUITE. Gamma Technologies develops and licenses GT-SUITE, a leading multi-physics CAE system simulation software.  GT-SUITE includes a complete library of physics-based modeling templates covering fluid flow, thermal, mechanical, electrical, magnetic, chemistry, and controls. In addition, higher-level modeling templates are available that are specifically designed for specific applications. GT-SUITE applications include: powertrain, engine, a variety of vehicles, driveline, transmission, hybrids, exhaust aftertreatment chemistry, acoustics, cooling and thermal management, HVAC, hydraulics, fuel systems, lubrication, chain, gear and belt drives, and others.

Bio

Jon Zeman is a principal engineer and application team lead for vehicle systems integration at Gamma Technologies. In his current role, Zeman manages a global team of application engineers who are responsible for the technical success of customers across the globe. Specifically, his team is responsible for system-level integration for applications such as vehicle performance and energy management, controls integration, and optimization for the ground transportation, marine, and aerospace industries. Zeman graduated from the University of Iowa with a master’s degree in mechanical engineering in 2009.
