General Learning Strategy (GLS) courses (180, 181, and 182), managed by Academic Affairs, focus on approaches, methods, strategies, and techniques that empower students with success skills that encourage better academic, personal, and professional performance.

  • GLS 180 - (1.5 cr/hr) - Strategies for improving student learning, including reading comprehension and memory techniques, effective note-taking and test-taking strategies, time and stress management, procrastination reduction and motivation enhancement, healthy lifestyle habits, self-advocacy skills.
  • GLS 181 - (0.5 cr/hr) - Create a pathway for students to excel in their studies in general and their early-stage college mathematics, which is a cornerstone for success in STEM degrees.
  • GLS 182 - (0.5 cr/hr) - Students meet bi-weekly with an academic coach to discuss a variety of topics that may impact their academics and receive guidance through effective strategies, techniques, methods and resources.

GLS students are supported by both graduate and undergraduate peer-coaches. Students may receive additional academic subject-specific assistance provided via the Academic Resource Center (ARC).

Open coaching sessions are also offered to students who would like to work with an academic coach on a semi-regular or one-off basis with no obligation and without registration. These personalized sessions with a coach can help you become a more effective student by exploring strategies that increase the awareness of how you learn.
