Happy Birthday Professor Mies Celebrating Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s 121st Birthday

Date

Chicago, IL — February 20, 2007 —

Friends, fans, and followers of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe will gather on the Illinois Institute of Technology campus on Tuesday, March 27, 2007, to celebrate the famed architect’s 121st birthday.

In addition to martinis, hors d’oeuvres, and live jazz, the evening will include Franz Schulze and Edward Windhorst--authors of the 2007 revised edition of Mies van der Rohe, A Critical Biography and Critique--reading new passages from the book, including transcripts of the Farnsworth house trial and the reading of Mies' will.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was one of the twentieth century’s most illustrious architects. No one subjected the building art to a more rigorous analysis of structure and space or translated it with greater sensitivity into the abstract form that was central to the expressive language of architectural modernism. Mies designed 17 buildings on IIT’s campus and chaired the College of Architecture from 1938 to 1958. In a completely rewritten second edition titled Mies van der Rohe, A Critical Biography and Critique, Schulze and Windhorst trace Mies' family background growing up in Aachen, Germany, his early architectural and cultural influences, the development of his European career, and his renowned career in Chicago and the Americas.

Organized by the Mies van der Rohe Society, the public is invited to this black-and-white attired affair at IIT's S.R. Crown Hall, 3360 S. State St., Chicago, from 5:30 – 8 p.m.
