Chicago, March 7, 2006—Third-year College of Architecture students at Illinois Institute of Technology are working with the Chinese Mutual Aid Association (CMAA) to design the organization’s new headquarters at 4836 N. Sheridan Road in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood. Denise Lam, the CMAA director and members of her staff will be at S.R. Crown Hall, 3360 S State Street, to review the mid-term results on Friday, March 10 from noon to 6pm.

The students worked with CMAA staff to determine the organization’s requirements for the design and use of the facility. CMAA worked with a realtor to select the site for the organization, which is currently operating out of a storefront on Argyle Street.

“Our goal in pursuing a potentially real project like that of the Chinese Mutual Aid Association is to provide the students with a richer and potentially more meaningful experience,” said Tom Brock, IIT Architecture Studio Professor. “It allows students to solve real problems for real people.”

The CMAA is a not-for-profit, community-based social services agency whose mission is to serve the needs, promote the interests, and enhance the well-being of Chinese and other immigrants and refugees in the Chicago area, and to foster their participation in American society.
