IIT Research Faculty Member Named IEEE Fellow

Kenneth J. Zdunek honored for his work in mobile communications and networking

The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) has elected Kenneth J. Zdunek, a research faculty member in electrical and computer engineering at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) and an IIT electrical engineering Ph.D. alumnus, to its class of 2009 Fellows for his “leadership in integrating voice and data communications in networks.” The highest grade of membership, IEEE Fellowship is attained through nomination by peers and approval by the IEEE Board of Directors for distinction in the profession. IEEE is the world’s leading professional association for the advancement of technology.

Currently conducting work at IIT’s Wireless Network and Communications Research Center (WiNCom) in the areas of dynamic spectrum access systems, wireless interference characterization and mitigation and efficient spectrum utilization, Zdunek has more than 30 years of experience in mobile communications and networking, and consults in these areas. Prior to joining IIT, Zdunek served as Vice President of Networks Research at Motorola, where he directed innovation and product concept development activities worldwide in the areas of IP mobility, services convergence for 3G and 4G networks, network management, network security, DOCSIS, GPON and software engineering effectiveness.

Zdunek holds 17 U.S. patents, including four Motorola Business Patents of the Year. He is on the advisory boards of IIT’s Armour College of Engineering and the Northwestern University Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department. A past-president of the Chicago Public Schools Student Science Fair, he currently serves on its board of directors. Zdunek received both his bachelor’s and master’s in electrical engineering from Northwestern University. He earned his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from IIT.

The IEEE- Chicago Section will host a dinner-dance reception in honor of Zdunek on Saturday, March 28, in Niles, Ill.
