The 21st century has heralded a new era in the generation and implementation of technologies in health care delivery worldwide. There are waves of innovations in genetics, biotechnology, and in better management of such and other medical technologies. The past four HCTM conferences have examined a variety of issues: how much technology is enough? What are the returns and benefits from medical technologies, and what are the applications and the organizational and other issues in cutting-edge technologies such as e-health. This conference occurs at an important juncture, when the future direction of research must be determined. To do so, trends and advances being made in the field of technology and its management in healthcare delivery must be identified.
