Chicago, IL — September 1, 2005 —

An Agreement to establish an Honors BS/DO Dual Admissions Program (DAP) was made on August 30 between the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) and Midwestern University for its Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine (CCOM).

"Students will gain dual admission to both IIT and CCOM. Given the increasing technological advances for the diagnosis and treatment of disease, a rigorous baccalaureate education in a technological field is ideal preparation for students interested in pursuing a career in osteopathic medicine," says Kenneth Stagliano, chair of IIT’s Premedical Advisory Board.

The DAP program provides an educational opportunity for high school seniors interested in entering the profession of osteopathic medicine. Admission to the program will be highly competitive and finalists usually rank in the upper 10 percent of their high school class.

The osteopathic philosophy is to treat the whole person, not just the symptoms. It emphasizes the interrelationships of structure and function, and the appreciation of the body's ability to heal itself. Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) practice this distinct field. Other than MD's, DO’s are the only type of physician in the United States who are fully trained and licensed to perform surgery and prescribe medicine.

Founded in 1890, IIT is a Ph.D.-granting technological university awarding degrees in the sciences, mathematics and engineering, as well as architecture, psychology, design, business and law. IIT’s interprofessional, technology-focused curriculum prepares the university’s 6,200 students for leadership roles in an increasingly complex and culturally diverse global workplace.
