Illinois Institute of Technology Provost Alan Cramb Elected to National Academy of Engineering

Cramb joins fellow NAE member IIT President John L. Anderson

Alan Cramb, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Illinois Institute of Technology, has recently been elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). He is one of 67 new members and 11 foreign associates who have been elected to the NAE’s 2014 membership class. Cramb, who is also the Charles and Lee Finkl Professor of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at IIT, is being honored for his contributions to the development of high-integrity continuously cast steels.

Election to the NAE is one of the highest professional distinctions an engineer can receive for significant contributions to the research, practice or education of engineering. Cramb joins IIT President John L. Anderson and 41 other IIT faculty and alumni who are members of the NAE.

Prior to becoming Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Illinois Tech, Cramb served as the Dean of Engineering and the John A. Clark and Edward T. Crossan Professor of Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. In addition, Cramb served as the Department Head of the Materials Science and Engineering Department at Carnegie Mellon University, co-directing its Center for Iron and Steelmaking Research. He was also awarded the Posco Chair in Steel Processing.

A native of Scotland, Cramb earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Metallurgy from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow and his doctorate degree in Metallurgy and Materials Science from the University of Pennsylvania.

Cramb is also a Distinguished Member or Fellow of the Association of Iron and Steel Technology (AIST), the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers (AIME), The American Society for Materials (ASM), and The American Academy for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the Iron and Steel Society of Japan.
