Largest Showing of Terrence Karpowicz Sculptures

Date

Chicago, IL — April 5, 2005 —

art @ IIT, Illinois Institute of Technology, will host the largest exhibit of work by sculptor Terrence Karpowicz to date.

With over sixty pieces, the exhibit is a snapshot of his 22-year career. The exhibit illustrates his recurring, familiar themes, others that have evolved over time, plus work that has never been out of the studio. The exhibit title "No Limits" refers to the great variety of work that he has produced within a basic vocabulary grounded in craftsmanship, material and geometry.

“No Limits” will be held in and around the Kemper Room Art Gallery in the Paul V. Galvin Library, 35 West 33rd Street, from April 5 through September 9, 2005. An artist reception will be held Tuesday, April 12 at 5:30 p.m.

“I am particularly drawn to tension at the point of contact, or "joint", between disparate materials. By joining irregular, organic materials to machine-tooled geometric shapes of metal, I can create actual or implied kinetic relationships among the elements of the sculpture,” said Karpowicz.

All the works exhibit craftsmanship as a connector of a variety of materials and basic geometry; kinetic pieces that really move and others that only seem to want to move. Granite, timber, and steel are connected so they stabilize a form or embrace it as it tries to explode. The connections literally suspend these heavy materials so they seem weightless midair.

Much of his heavy timber craftsmanship can be traced back to being a millwright apprentice in England under a Fulbright Scholarship. He repaired wind and water mills after completing his master's degree in sculpture at the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana. Since 1976 his studio has been located in Chicago.

Karpowicz was a co-founder of the Pier Walk outdoor sculpture exhibit at Navy Pier in 1995 and the co-director for the first five years; it continues to this day as one of the largest outdoor sculpture exhibits in the world.

Karpowicz has shown in over 100 galleries throughout the United States and his work is held in many private, public, corporate and museum collections in the U.S. and abroad, including a number large number of pieces throughout the Chicago area.

In addition to his Pier walk initiative, he has continued to promote sculpture as curator, consultant, project and installation manager, mentor and visiting lecturer to a number of galleries, colleges, universities and organizations.

Terrence Karpowicz’s “No Limits” exhibition continues through September 9, 2005. art @ IIT hours are Monday-Friday, noon-10 p.m.; Saturday 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sunday 2-10 p.m.

This exhibit is being curated by Robert J. Krawczyk, art @ IIT gallery director and assistant professor in the College of Architecture.
