Illinois Institute of Technology is offering a one-day Business Writing Workshop March 3, 2020 at the Rice campus in Wheaton. Seats are limited!

Most business professionals write far more than they think. Whether it’s emails, client letters, proposals, performance reviews, procedures, instructions, recommendation letters, reports, or just a note on a file, you spend a great deal of your time communicating.

No matter the field, communication with clients, coworkers, and superiors can cause a great deal of stress. Fair or not, your audience judges you daily on the writing you send out. Yet many people assume that writing is a gift that you’re either born with or can never master. In fact, it is a skill like any other, developed through instruction, practice, and feedback.

This workshop is an intensive session where you’ll learn the skills of effective business communication that you can start applying immediately to your workplace writing. You’ll learn how to assess your audiences and adapt your writing to different contexts. We’ll discuss how to write effectively in the different genres of business writing. We’ll also cover best practices at every stage of the writing process, from drafting and taking feedback all the way through editing and finishing touches.

Workshop objectives:

  • Compose well-structured, clear, and concise business writing.
  • Build skills in grammar, sentence structure, language, tone, and style.
  • Develop skills in planning, organizing, and editing business writing.
  • Learn to detect and eliminate common errors in business writing.
  • Streamline the writing process and learn the habits of efficient writers.
  • Learn to apply the structures of professional communication that allow readers to quickly retrieve information from your documents.
  • Discuss the strategies for effectively giving and receiving feedback.
  • Practice how to effectively design and package documents for maximum impact.

Who can attend?:

This workshop will be of benefit to all professionals who wish to improve their written communication skills. This program is ideal for anyone; it is ideal for people who are in both non-technical and technical fields—managers, employees, customers, engineers, regulatory agencies, lawyers, stockholders, etc.
