The Department of Mechanical, Materials, and Aerospace Engineering presents its MMAE 593 seminar series featuring guest speaker Nicklas Bylund, head of engineering projects at Sandvik Coromant, who will present “Machining and Automation: A Career Path.” This event is open to the public and will take place on Thursday, January 15, from 12:45–1:45 p.m. in room 104 of the Stuart Building.

Abstract

Machining is an important part of industry. Successful machining is the ability of raw material economically being able to manufacture parts to the right tolerance. The following topics will be covered:

  • Basics of machining (turning, milling, and drilling)

  • Components from different segments (aero, auto, gen eng), and their differences

  • What is important when developing a complete machining solution for a component

  • Skills gap and career opportunities in machining including automation

Biography

Nicklas Bylund is the head of engineering projects at Sandvik Coromant, a global leader in the manufacturing of carbide cutting tools and associated CAM software. Bylund holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Luleå University of Technology, an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the Royal Institute of Technology, and an M.B.A. from Blekinge Institute of Technology, all in Sweden. He also earned a French engineering degree in materials and vehicle engineering from École Nationale Supérieure des Techniques Avancées in Paris. He began his career at Volvo Car Corporation in the car body department and later worked as a liaison engineer at Ford Germany, supporting the joint development of the Volvo, Ford, Mazda, and Range Rover P1/C1 and EUCD platforms. Bylund then joined SSAB Swedish Steel, leading customer projects focused on using hardened high-strength steels to improve performance. For more than a decade, Bylund has held a range of technical and managerial roles at Sandvik Coromant in both Sweden and the United States. In his current position, he leads an organization of more than 100 project engineers across 19 countries. His team develops cutting tool packages, including CAM programming, time and cost analysis, for customer components in industries such as aerospace, automotive, and general engineering.
