Description

A biological cell contains cytosol (cytoplasmic matrix) enclosed by the cellular membrane. The cytosol is a viscous (viscoelastic) fluid with suspending particles and fibers. A Darcy fluid or a Brinkman fluid is often used as a simplified model for such complex biological suspensions.

However, the solid structure is assumed fixed in both space and time in original Darcy/Brinkman model. This raises serious concern to model cytosol as a Darcy/Brinkman fluid because the cytoplasmic matrix is dynamic and deformable. In this work we present a model for a soft porous drop and examine both the flow and the deformable solid structures under various flowing conditions. We will illustrate the effects of porosity, permeability and solid structures on the flow pattern. We will further illustrate how this model can be extended to incorporate active stresses from the structures.
