Tech and Social Justice Speaker Series: Tech Companies—Equal Opportunity Policies vs. Realities

Tech companies

Many technology companies have stated their commitment to social justice, vowing to increase the numbers of African-Americans, ethnic minorities, and women in the ranks of their technical and management staff and to ensure their companies “do no evil”—or even promote social good.

What steps are these companies taking to equalize opportunities within their organizations and to promote ethical outcomes in the societies that their products are helping to shape? What are the results of their actions?

These and other related questions will be discussed by our panelists: Illinois Tech Associate Professor Mar HicksPoonam Lakhani, and Vinesh Kannan, an Illinois Tech alumnus who quit his job at Google due to unfair/unethical treatment of artificial intelligence developers.
