DeWinter said this presents a copyright issue, but because it’s a computer program generating the images, it makes it hard to trace back who is actually culpable. “It’s a problem of a giant, diffused system of multiple actors,” she said.

“We’re teaching you these concepts, but you don’t see the connection between the concepts and how it’s going to play out in the world,” said Lance Fortnow, dean of the College of Computing to NPR's Marketplace. “This idea of bringing companies in early … then as you’re learning, you can see, ‘Oh, I see how maybe I can apply this idea to what the company is doing.'”
“One of the biggest misconceptions is that people think that they’re not a target for hackers or malicious actors,” said Calvin Nobles, chair of the Department of Information Technology and Management. “All of us are connected today 24/7, so we have to understand that ... we are vulnerable.”
