Armour College Students Are Top Winners at IIT Research Day

The 2015 IIT Research Day Poster Competition was successful for Armour College of Engineering students, who claimed five out of the six top spots. Held on April 15, the competition is separated into graduate and undergraduate categories. The student’s posters are judged by faculty members based on clarity, content, and verbal and visual presentation.

The top three spots in the undergraduate category were awarded to Armour students who were funded, for at least part of their research, via the Armour R&D program. The program is designed to give undergraduate students an understanding of the research and development process through hands-on experience in the lab of an Armour Faculty member.

Undergraduate winners

Yusra Sarhan (BME, 3rd year) and Professor of Biomedical Engineering, David Mogul, received first place for their project Finding Improved Protocols for Using Deep-Brain Stimulation for Treating Epileptic Seizures in Rats. Sarhan has previously been awarded a high-score award at the Summer 2014 Armour R&D Expo for her work.

Ritika Dhawan (BME, 4th year) and Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Georgia Papavasiliou, were awarded second place for their project Doxycicline Loaded Nanoparticles for Healing of Anastomotic Leaks. Dhawan also earned first-place in the Water Theme at the Spring 2014 Armour R&D Expo with her project.

Georgi Hristov (AE, 5th year) and Professor of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering and Director of the Fluid Dynamics Research Center, David Williams, earned the third place for their project Innovative Control Effectors for Maneuvering of Air Vehicles. Earlier in the semester, Hristov placed first in the undergraduate category at the 2015 MMAE Student Research Poster Competition with his project.

Graduate winners

Martin Detrois (Ph.D. Candidate in Materials Engineering) and Professor of Materials Engineering, Sammy Tin, took first place in Graduate Category with their project Modeling of Twin Density and Length Fraction in Ni-base Superalloy RR1000 for Grain Boundary Engineering. Detrois has previously placed second in the 2015 MMAE Student Research Poster Competition, third at the 2014 IIT Research Day Poster Competition, and second in the 2013 MMAE Student Research Poster Competition for his work in Dr. Tin’s lab.

Javid Mahmoudzadeh (Ph.D. Candidate in Mechanical Engineering) and Associate Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Kevin Cassel, earned the second place in Graduate Category for his work Growth and Remodeling: Initial Hyperplasia Explained Using Shape Optimization and Computational Fluid Dynamics.
