The Instituto Ling and Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) announced the signing of an agreement that will strengthen the teaching of engineering in Brazil.

Under the terms of the agreement, the Instituto Ling will provide scholarships that cover from 25% to 50% of the costs for Brazilians to study post-graduate engineering at IIT. The scholarships are open to Brazilian students who have an undergraduate degree in engineering, can demonstrate that with the resources provided by Instituto Ling they will be able to complete a master’s degree and will return to Brazil to teach engineering in a university and/or work in their profession. Only students who have been admitted to an IIT graduate engineering program and recommended for a scholarship by their IIT department will be considered for scholarships from Instituto Ling.

The mission of the Institute is to contribute to the social, economic and cultural development of Brazil by creating opportunities through investing in education. Mr. Sheun Ming Ling and his wife, Lydia Wong Ling, immigrated to Brazil in the 1950s. The Ling Family owns and manages PETROPAR S.A., which operates through a network of subsidiary companies and affiliates in the areas of packaging, nonwovens, and fiber.

"Ling Family believes that business activity is the main force to create wealth and well being in a society. Instituto Ling's proposal is to support young Brazilians who share these values and demonstrate leadership potential. The agreement with IIT, providing scholarships to Engineering programs at one of the most respected universities in the United States, is an important achievement to allow young professionals to develop a successful career and contribute to improving our society," says Mr. William Ling, Director of Instituto Ling.

Located in Chicago, Illinois Institute of Technology traces its roots to Armour Institute, begun in 1890 to prepare students of all backgrounds for leadership roles - primarily as engineers - in a changing industrial society. Today IIT's Armour College of Engineering offers undergraduate, master’s, and Ph.D. programs in biomedical engineering, chemical and environmental engineering, civil and architectural engineering, electrical and computer engineering and mechanical, materials, and aerospace engineering.

"Students come from all over the world to study IIT in Chicago. Many of them have gone on to become inventors, entrepreneurs, and industrialists fueling their home country’s economic growth. We hope that this scholarship will enable more Brazilian students to study at IIT and develop their creativity," says Dr. Darsh Wasan, IIT vice president, international affairs and Motorola Chair Professor of Chemical Engineering.

Founded in 1890, IIT is a Ph.D.-granting university with more than 6,700 students in engineering, sciences, architecture, psychology, design, humanities, business and law.
