The Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) 2017 Annual Conference in Atlanta, Georgia was a wonderful opportunity that CSCMP offers to student members. This year, CSCMP was able to send six INTM students. Kashyap Thakkar, one of the student attendees notes that “the best part of the Conference is that I learned, how industry leaders view the field of Supply Chain. It was amazing to learn that everyone had different perspectives about what Supply Chain means, depending on their business and their industry.”

The students found the keynote address, “Big Data & Story Telling” by Matthew Luhn, Acclaimed Pixar Animation Studios Storyteller and Speaker, to be especially inspiring. Luhn used his experience with storytelling to illustrate how big data can help companies, organizations, and professionals forge stronger, more meaningful connections with consumers. They also enjoyed the smaller sessions such as “The Future of Supply Chain is Digital” by Troels Adrian, Director, SC Ecosystems Expansion, Metro Atlanta Chamber, and “The Use of Block chain to Redefine Service” by Brian Tessier, VP of Global Supply Chain, Schneider Electric.

The professional education sessions were just one part of the benefits for these students. The other was the time spent networking with industry professionals and learning about their struggles, experiences, challenges and successes. In a note thanking CSCMP and INTM for this opportunity, Kashyap noted that one of the highlights of the Conference for him was the chance to meet Dr. Chris Caplice, Executive Director of the MIT Center for Transportation and Logistics, and recipient of the CSCMP 2016 Distinguished Service Award.

INTM has been providing administrative support for the CSCMP IIT Student Chapter since 2012. The IIT-CSCMP Chicago Roundtable, established in 2012, is the first CSCMP student chapter started at an Illinois university. Student volunteers serve as Chapter Officers to coordinate on and off-campus activities with INTM faculty and staff support.
