Leon Shaw, the Rowe Family Chair Professor in Sustainable Energy and professor of materials science and engineering at Illinois Institute of Technology, has received the Excellence in Research Award from the university’s Department of Mechanical, Materials, and Aerospace Engineering.

Focusing his work on the synthesis and processing of advanced materials for energy and structural applications, Shaw is currently conducting research in areas including Li-ion batteries, Na-ion batteries, redox flow batteries, and all-solid-state batteries for a wide range of energy storage applications.

The departmental award is the second time Shaw has been recognized for his work recently. He was also selected as a Researcher to Know for 2020 by the Illinois Science and Technology Coalition.

“These honors are due to the unwavering support from the institution and my colleagues, as well as the dedication and hard work of my graduate students and postdocs,” Shaw says. “I would like to thank them for their support, which made these honors possible.”
