Lewis College Teaching Awards announced

Lewis College of Human Sciences Dean Christine Himes has announced the Lewis College Teaching Awards for the 2014-15 academic year. Assistant Professor of Communication and Information Studies Libby Hemphill and Associate Professor of Psychology Arlen Moller are this year’s recipients.

Professor Hemphill teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses in the Department of Humanities. She is generous with her time and resources, often organizing out-of-classroom sessions for her students who need help with writing or understanding the material.

Since joining the Humanities Department in the 2010-11 academic year, Dr. Hemphill has developed and taught new undergraduate courses that significantly strengthen the communications and digital humanities majors, including Research Methods in Digital Humanities.

Students say, "She really cares about what 's most important—learning the material and how to apply it in real life," "I found myself eager to come to class to hear her insights," and "One of the best professors at IIT."

Prof. Hemphill is also nominated for IIT’s John. W Rowe Excellence in Teaching Award, which will be announced April 9.

Professor Arlen Moller he has been an important contributor to the development of Psychology's undergraduate  program and an excellent course instructor. The majority of Prof. Moller's course evaluations have been above 4.00, and he has provided several students with high-quality research experiences.

Prof. Moller has also been instrumental in curriculum development, including for the newer Behavioral Health and Wellness degree. He is currently teaching a newly designed class on the "Psychology of Money."

Prof. Moller enjoys supporting students’ professional development through activities such as IIT Research Day, the Leadership Academy Sophomore Retreat, and events sponsored by the IIT chapter of Psi Chi, the national psychology honor society.
