In the spring time, trade winds cause yellow dust from the Mongolian deserts to travel eastward across Northeast Asia.  The dust picks up industrial pollution along the way from factories in China, causing respiratory issues for people across China, Korea, and Japan.

Matt Shapiro, associate professor of political science, published an op-ed piece on this topic in The Korea Herald on April 18, 2016. “Dust in the wind, solutions in the lab” discusses using scientific evidence to address the problem of industrial pollution in Northeast Asia.
