Creating a Globally Focused Career

It took a bit of soul searching, but Gerard Jumanan chose just the right degree program for him at Illinois Tech: global studies.

“My academic experience was excellent,” he says. “My program allowed me to study politics, the economy, and cultural backgrounds around the world, while also sharpening my communication skills.”

Jumanan didn’t start out as a global studies major, but stayed flexible and found his way.

“The most valuable lesson I have learned is to never give up,” he says. “College is not easy, but it is what you make of it. I needed time to figure out what I really wanted to do. Illinois Tech is a great school that shows you how hard work can translate into success if you put in the effort and time.”

Recognizing his passion for Japanese culture, Jumanan complemented his coursework with a summer study abroad in Osaka, Japan.

“Everything about the trip, from the group excursions to various historical sites, to trying out different foods, to the lectures and presentations we had, was immensely rewarding,” he says.

In the fall of 2019, Jumanan interned at the Japan America Society of Chicago. He plans to apply to law schools in 2020.
