The Modernist Jewel of Campus
Situated in the heart of Mies Campus, S. R. Crown Hall has been referred to as the “finest work of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe,” a Modernist architecture master and the former longtime head of Illinois Tech’s architecture program. Home to the university’s College of Architecture and a National Historic Landmark, Crown Hall is noted for its column-free, open-floor plan, supported by four steel plate girders. And the building—home to generations of architects who shaped the skyline in Chicago and beyond and innovators who made their mark elsewhere—continues to evolve, including through the university‘s work to transform its energy usage.
