AI Abilities: Measurement and Assessment of Unique and Joint (with Humans) Contributions to Business Operations

Abstract:
In contrast to the long and established trajectory of academic research on human abilities, the domain of Artificial Intelligence abilities remains a key unexplored area. We address this research gap in two respects. First, we develop and test (using data from a January 2023 large-scale survey of United States consumers) the AI Abilities Scale designed to measure a spectrum of 15 AI abilities. Second, we use this scale to assess how AI contributes uniquely and jointly (with humans) to business operations.
We discuss implications of our results for collaborative intelligence (integrated human-machine teams), automation, augmentation, and the future of work.
