Chicago Area SIAM Student Conference 2013

Date

Haley Yaple, secretary of Northwestern University Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) student chapter gives us a recap of the first annual Chicago Area SIAM Student Conference:

The end of April marked an exciting milestone for SIAM student chapters in Chicago: the first annual Chicago Area SIAM Student Conference. The event, held at UIC on April 27-28, invited all applied math students in the area to come together, have some fun, and learn about what’s going on locally in applied mathematics, and it was a great success. Featuring three plenary speakers at the top of their fields, talks from graduate students working in a variety of areas, a poster session, and career panel, there was a little something for everyone. Several dozen students from six local universities participated in the weekend’s activities, which included time for students to get to know one another. In addition to learning about current research and getting career advice, students had the chance to form lasting connections with their peers.

The conference planning committee from SIAM student chapters at Illinois Institute of Technology, the University of Illinois at Chicago, and Northwestern University are already at work planning next year’s conference, to be held next spring at Northwestern University. We hope to learn from the work we did this year to make it an even bigger and better event!
