College of Science Hosts Multiple Events During Homecoming Weekend

Date

The College of Science hosted multiple events during this year’s Homecoming Weekend, including the Dale Webster Lecture, the Second Annual Biology Alumni Reunion, and an alumni appreciation event.

The Dale Webster Lecture, hosted by the Department of Biology, featured speaker Carolyn Larabell from the Department of Anatomy at University of California San Francisco and the Advanced Light Source at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. She is the founder and director of the National Center for X-ray Tomography, an NIH-funded facility in the Advanced Light Source that enables X-ray tomographic imaging of cells and subcellular structures. The title of her talk was “Cellular CT Scans with Soft X-ray Tomography.”

Dale Webster is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Biology. He taught at Illinois Tech from 19682000 and founded the field of bacterial hemoglobins. The Dale Webster Lecture was created to honor his accomplishments and many years of service to Illinois Tech. The auditorium was filled with Illinois Tech students, faculty, staff, alumni, and Webster himself.

Additionally, the biology department hosted the Second Annual Biology Alumni Reunion. Fifteen biology alumni, mostly recent graduates from the Chicago area, as well as faculty, staff, and current biology graduate students attended the event.

The alumni appreciation event was held in the Robert A. Pritzker Science Center. This event provided an opportunity for College of Science alumni and their guests to gather and network along with College of Science faculty and administration. Alumni who attended included Ted Erikson (CHE ‘52, MS CHEM ‘59), Michael Hill (CS ‘82), Amit Okhandiar (EE ‘88), Vazi Okhandiar (MS CS ‘88), Richard Oracheff (EE ‘68), Richard Neuhaus (CHEM ‘72), Lisa Sembach (MATH ‘93, MS STAT ‘95), and Hung Tran (CS ‘90).
