Students Form SIAM Chapter

A Society for Industry and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) student chapter recently formed in the Applied Mathematics department. The first graduate student organization in the department, the SIAM Student Chapter will provide a forum for all graduate and undergraduate students to increase their academic and social reach within the global Applied Mathematics community. It will organize various activities including research seminars, social activities, inter-department competitions, and field trips under the direction of faculty advisors Xiaofan Li and Igor Cialenco. An election for officers was held on Fed 8th:

  • President: Ben Niu (Ph.D. 2nd)
  • Vice-President: Yizhi Zhang (MS 1st)
  • Secretary: Aparna Poddar (MMF 1st)
  • Treasurer: Jiarui Yang (Ph.D. 1st)

SIAM is one of the largest professional organizations in the Applied Mathematics world, bringing together the engineering, industrial, and academic worlds to foster the spread of mathematical knowledge. SIAM publishes 13 peer-reviewed journals and approximately 25 books annually, as well as hosting conferences and symposia worldwide. Currently, six full-time Applied Math faculty are members of SIAM.
