O

Others (CSEP)

In addition to the publications on this list, CSEP also publishes a periodical, Perspectives on the Professions. To obtain back issues or to be added to the mailing list write to the Managing Editor, Perspectives, at the Center.

Trying Times: Science and Responsibilities after Daubert.
The volume includes essays by Barbara Jacobs Rothstein, a federal judge, Richard Meserve, a former litigator in high stakes cases involving scientific testimony, Sheila Jasanoff (Science and Public Policy, Harvard), and Ullica Segerstrale (Social Science, IIT). The editor, Vivian Weil, has an introductory essay. An annotated bibliography acquaints readers with the lively literature since the Supreme Court's 1993 decision in Daubert that made judges gatekeepers for admitting science in the courts. The volume is aimed to clarify the responsibilities of judges, lawyers, scientists, engineers, and researchers in medicine at this intersection of law and science.

The cost is $7.50 for the U.S. and Canada and $12 for international orders to cover shipping and handling.

CSEP also distributes a "Compilation of Statements Relating to Standards of Professional Responsibility and Freedom". The Statements make up a collection in CSEP's library of several hundred codes of ethics, advisory opinions, resolutions, and similar documents promulgated by professional and trade associations, business organizations, government, and other groups. There is a $5.00 charge for the Compilation. Copies of items included can be obtained for the cost of photocopying.

A Referral Bank Directory to CSEP's special collection of materials on other centers is available for $10.00.

Copies of the Center's widely distributed Selected Annotated Bibliography of Professional Ethics and Social Responsibility in Engineering (1980), compiled by Robert F. Ladenson, James Choromokos, Ernest d'Anjou, Martin Pimsler and Howard Rosen, 157 pp., are available for $4.00.

Beyond Whistleblowing.- Defining Engineers’ Responsibilities, Vivian Weil, ed., a 334-page volume of the proceedings of the March 1982 Second National Conference on Ethics in Engineering, can be obtained from the Center for $7.00 per copy. This volume brings together papers on engineers' rights and responsibilities, an ethical work environment, risk and decision making, and responsibilities of professional societies. Many of the papers appeared as journal articles.

The Humanities, Health Care and the Elderly by Frederick Elliston is the final report of a series of workshops organized in Chicago on the moral, ethical and social issues in medical care that are especially acute for senior citizens. There is a $3.00 charge for the report.

Six monographs in a series on professional responsibility produced from an EXXON Education Foundation grant are available from CSEP, as well as from the publisher Kendall/Hunt of Dubuque, Iowa. The titles include Whistleblowing.- Ethical and Legal Issues in Expressing Dissent (James C. Petersen and Dan Farrell), Risk-Benefit Analysis in Decisions Concerning Public Safety and Health (Mark Sagoff), Conflicts of Interest in Engineering (Paula Wells, Hardy Jones and Michael Davis), The Moral Status of Loyalty (Marcia Baron), Technology Assessment.- A Historical Approach (Rondo Cameron and A. J. Millard), Professional Responsibility for Harmful Actions (Martin Curd and Larry May). The entire set costs $43.30, individual monographs range from $6.95 to $7.75. Individual titles are currently available at a 20% discount, and a discount of 25% is available for the entire set.

Owning Scientific and Technical Information: Value and Ethical Issues, Vivian Weil and John Snapper, eds., Rutgers University Press, is available in paperback for $15.00 per copy.

Ethics Bowl tapes are available for $10.00 per tape, plus $3.00 postage.
