Step 1: Usage Check
- Is the content currently in use?
- No: It may fall under limited exceptions (e.g., archived content or pre-existing social media).
- Yes: Proceed to Step 2.
Step 2: Origin Check
- Is it third-party or vendor-provided? (e.g., simulations, LTI tools)
- Yes: You must ensure the vendor content meets WCAG 2.1 AA standards.
- No: If the content was created by you, proceed to Step 3.
Step 3: Content Type Selection
- Is the content a Document (PDF, Word, PPT) or a Canvas Page?
- If Document:
- Check for Scanned Text: Is it a scanned image of text in a PDF? If yes, it must be remediated or replaced. Check the Accessible PDF Guidelines.
- Run Accessibility Checkers: Run the built-in accessibility checker for any Word, PDF, or PPT files and fix all flagged issues.
- If Canvas Page (including Assignments, Quizzes, and Discussions):
- If Document:
- Run Canvas Accessibility Checker: Use the built-in Canvas Accessibility Checker on every page.
- Verify Elements: Specifically check headings, color contrast, and alt text.
- Remediate: Fix flagged issues and re-run the checker after edits.
Step 4: Multimedia Review
- Does the content contain audio or video?
- Yes: Ensure there are accurate captions or transcripts.
- Action: If using auto-captions, they must be manually reviewed and corrected for accuracy.
Step 5: Final Course-Level Audit
- Did You Run the Canvas Course-level Accessibility Checker?
- Final Action: Use the Canvas Accessibility Checker for your entire course. Fix all flagged issues and re-run the checker until the course is clear.
