Ergonomics is the study of the relationship between people and their working environment, especially the equipment they use so that the people and things interact most efficiently and safely.

Fire is a real hazard. To protect our community Illinois Institute of Technology:

  • Performs regular fire drills.
  • Facilities and an outside contractor regularly inspect fire extinguishers
  • All new construction and renovations are designed to reduce the risk of fire.
  • Illinois Tech supports the purchase of equipment such as flammable liquid cabinets to reduce the risk of fire.
  • Illinois Tech has regular inspections by the Chicago Fire Department.
  • Illinois Tech has an outside contractor perform regular inspections, maintenance and repair of fire alarm systems and sprinkler systems.
  • Reviews Standard Operating Procedures and Work Processes to reduce the risk of fire.
  • Maintains emergency egress.

Illinois Institute of Technology seeks to ensure that the hazards of all chemicals used within its facilities are evaluated and tha information concerning their hazards is transmitted to all affected personnel. Illinois Institute of Technology has a program for establishing appropriate protective measures for employees, students, contractors and others working on our campus.

At Illinois Institute of Technology, we are concerned about the health and safety in IIT ‘s built environment.

Service areas include:

  • Construction and facility maintenance support to safely manage hazardous building materials such as asbestos, lead paint, and mold
  • Workplace Health stewardship in areas such as hearing conservation, respiratory protection and indoor air quality.
  • Review of new building design and construction materials to promote healthy building occupancy.
  • Project support for laboratory, storage tank and emergency generator decommissioning, and construction safety. 
     

If an injury or illness occurs, please call Public Safety at (312) 808-6300. As soon as possible report to your supervisor, Student Health and Wellness or Student Services.

Your contact will fill out an Incident Investigation form. This form will help Illinois Institute of Technology identify and correct hazards before they cause serious or further injuries.

If you are an employee, report to Human resources as soon as possible.

Hazardous Waste Disposal pickup is available the second Friday of each month. If you require hazardous waste disposal, please email cchaffee@iit.edu to request pickup. The specified monthly pickup dates are preferred because they are performed by trained hazardous material contractors. If you need pickup sooner, please enter a HawkWorks request.

Uncontaminated Sharps will be picked up by facilities. Please enter a HawkWorks request for pickup.

Biological waste must be picked up by an independent contractor. Please submit a requisition through buyIt for this service.

Radioactive waste may be picked up by calling the Radiation Safety Officer at (847) 965-1999.

To dispose of uncontaminated E-waste, fill out a HawkWorks request.
