Utility Outage

Utility outages such as loss of power or water, gas leaks, or network disruptions can occur for a variety of reasons. Regardless of the type of outage, your safety is the highest priority. Knowing what to do when an outage occurs is essential.

Regardless of the type of outage, always report outages to Public Safety at 312.808.6300

Not only is Public Safety available 24/7, but there is a notification process in place to address utility disruptions. This ensures that the incident is properly documented and that the appropriate response units and/or individuals within the university are notified.

What to Expect
  • Temporary loss of lighting, heating/cooling, and building systems (including elevators)
  • Possible interruption of the internet, building access systems, or alarms
  • Emergency lighting may activate for a limited time
Emergency Actions

Here are some steps you can take to better prepare and ensure your safety during a power outage:

  • Remain calm and stay in place if it is safe to do so
  • Avoid using elevators and refrain from attempting to force open elevator doors

What to Expect

The following can help determine if there could be a gas leak:

  • SMELL - The most reliable sign of a natural gas leak is smell. Washington Gas adds an odorant called mercaptan to create the distinctive smell of sulfur or rotten eggs.
  • SIGHT - Unexplained, random dead patch of lawn or vegetation in an otherwise green area of lawn or vegetation, unnatural bubbles in puddles and waterways (pond, creek, lake) or dirt being thrown in the air.
  • HEARING - A hissing sound or blowing noises, typically accompanied by a gas odor.
Emergency Actions

If you believe there is a gas leak, be sure to do the following:

  • Leave the area, leaving doors and windows open to ventilate if possible.
  • Move to a safe location
  • Public Safety at 312.808.6363 immediately and provide the following information:
    • Your name
    • The location of the outage
    • If anyone is in need of medical assistance

What to Expect

In the event of a water outage, when turning on the faucet, expect there will be little to no water dispensed.
