Calvin Nobles Selected as New Chair of Department of Information Technology and Management

The Department of Information Technology and Management at Illinois Institute of Technology has new leadership leading into the 2021–22 academic year as Calvin Nobles has been named as the department’s new chair.

Nobles brings more than 25 years of professional cybersecurity experience to the university. A retired United States Navy officer, Nobles comes to Illinois Tech after serving as a vice president at Wells Fargo in Charlotte, North Carolina. Most recently, he supported Wells Fargo efforts in identity and access management (IAM) governance, advising senior managers on centralizing business enablement, reducing high friction, and simplifying access management support.

“We’re thrilled to have Calvin Nobles lead our Department of Information Technology and Management,” says Lance Fortnow, dean of Illinois Tech’s College of Computing. “Calvin has extensive military and corporate experience in cybersecurity. He will help Illinois Tech become a leader in educating students who can help meet this global challenge.”

Nobles’ academic experience includes teaching university courses at Arizona State University and the University of Maryland Global Campus. His previous academic experience includes stints as an adjunct faculty member at Indiana Wesleyan University, the University of Maryland Global Campus, Southern New Hampshire University, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.

As a researcher, Nobles has more than 20 years of experience in the fields of information security and human factors engineering, human factors and the implications on cybersecurity, information technology, data privacy, and data security. He is also researching the vulnerability of autonomous vehicles, the Internet of Things, and smart devices, as well as cultural influences on phishing susceptibility.

Nobles also completed a Cybersecurity Policy Fellowship with the New America Think Tank in Washington, D.C., in 2020.

Nobles earned a doctorate in business administration from Temple University this spring. He also holds a Ph.D. in human factors from Capitol Technology University in Laurel, Maryland, and a Ph.D. in management and engineering technology from Northcentral University in Scottsdale, Arizona.
