NASA’s Roman Telescope Opens Up New Window to the Universe
Humanity’s view of the universe is limited by how much of the sky that we can see at once. Our most powerful telescopes have taken us billions of light-years into the cosmos, but often through narrow windows. With the launch of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, NASA is opening that window wider than ever, giving astronomers an unprecedented view of the universe.
“The thing that really sets Roman apart from the existing space telescopes that we have, like Hubble and James Webb Space Telescope, is its wide field of view,” says Illinois Tech Assistant Teaching Professor Goni Halevi. “With a single image, it can see a huge swath of the sky.”
Launched August 30, 2026, and now traveling toward its final orbit roughly 1 million miles from Earth, the Roman telescope will survey expansive regions of the sky, helping scientists investigate dark matter, dark energy, and planets beyond our solar system.
The Roman’s field of view will be at least 100 times larger than the Hubble’s, allowing it to survey vast regions of the sky much more quickly and then map the universe on an unprecedented scale. Rather than searching for specific objects, the Roman will survey enormous numbers of galaxies to investigate one of the greatest mysteries in physics: dark energy.
Scientists know that dark energy is driving the universe’s accelerating expansion, but they still don’t know what it is or how it works. By studying the distribution and movement of galaxies across the cosmos, the Roman could provide new clues about the nature of dark energy.
The Roman will also search for planets and black holes using microlensing, a technique that can reveal objects that are invisible to other detection methods.
“We should be able to find some otherwise invisible black holes through these microlensing events,” says Halevi. “I think that’s one of the coolest things.”
