Review and Grade Video Assignments

In Canvas, instructors can review and grade video assignments directly through the assignment submission page. When a student submits a video, the instructor can open the submission in SpeedGrader, which allows them to watch the video, leave time-stamped comments, provide written or media feedback, and assign a grade.

To review and grade a video submission in Canvas:

  1. Go to your course.
  2. Click Grades in the course navigation menu.
  3. Locate the assignment column and click the submission icon (paper icon) for a student.
  4. Click the door icon with the arrow to open SpeedGrader on the right-hand side.
  5. Click the SpeedGrader button in the right panel.
  6. Click the video to play it directly in SpeedGrader and navigate through it.
  7. Add comments in the feedback section on the right. You may include specific timestamps if needed.
  8. Enter the grade in the grade box.
  9. Click Submit.

Notes

  • Once the Panopto video assignment is properly created by the instructor in Canvas, a private and dedicated submission folder will be automatically generated for each student. Students will not be able to view each other’s submissions. This folder is also separate from the default folder that contains all Zoom class recordings.
  • Similar to a regular assignment, after submitting the students’ grades, they will get notified depending on your grade posting policy to whether post the grades immediately or wait until all the grades are entered and then notify the students.
