LTI Instructions for Instructors

What is an LTI?

LTI Instructions for Instructors

Learning Tool Interoperability (LTI) is like a universal language that allows different educational tools, like online quizzes or interactive modules, to talk to each other and work together smoothly. It's similar to how apps on your phone share information and work together.

Here’s a list of LTIs that we are partnering with in Canvas:

  • Ascend Education
  • Cengage (WebAssign)
  • MacMillan Learning
  • McGraw Hill Connect
  • Packback
  • Pearson (My Lab and Mastering)
  • Piazza
  • SeatGen (Chicago Kent)
  • TestOut
  • UCertify
  • VoiceThread
  • W. W. Norton & Company

Please let us know if you are using an LTI tool that is not listed above.

How to add an LTI tool to your course

To add a certain LTI tool to your course, two IDs are required:

  • Client ID: The Client ID helps Canvas recognize and allow the tool to connect. We give this ID to the instructors so that they can add it to their course to generate a Deployment ID. Please let us know if you need the Client ID to add a tool to your course.
    (Client ID example: 21210000000000)
  • Deployment ID: Imagine it as a unique label for each time the tool is used in Canvas, such as in different courses. It helps Canvas organize and manage the tool's usage in different places. LTI publishers will ask for it whenever you want them to activate a tool in your course. You can easily find the Deployment ID after adding the Client ID to your course. We will discuss this in detail soon.
    (Deployment ID example: 123:2432as2bd78aad83c798jk0d34d1d06068d4671b)

Where to find the Client ID?

Please let us know if you need access to a Client ID by emailing SupportDesk@iit.edu, subject line: ATTN: CLI/Client ID. Tell us which LTI tool from the list above you will be using. We will send you the Client ID within 2 business days.

What to do after we send you the Client ID?

Now you need to create the Deployment ID and send it to that specific LTI publisher. They will take care of the activation process on their end and will let you know when it is done.

To create the Deployment ID:

  1. Open your course in Canvas.
  2. Go to Settings on the left menu.
  3. From the tabs on the top, go to Apps.
  4. Click on View App Configurations.
  5. Click on +App at the top.
  6. From the Configuration Type drop-down, select By Client ID.
  7. Enter the Client ID we provided. (Example: 212100000000000000).
  8. Click Submit.
  9. Click Install.
  10. Go back to Apps page and find the installed LTI there.
  11. Click on the settings icon (the gear) at the end of that LTI tab.
  12. Click on Deployment ID.

Now you should be able to view the Deployment ID. This ID is unique and needs to be sent to the LTI publisher to finish the installation process on their end.

What’s Next?

Each tool is a little different. Sometimes a link will appear in your course navigation and sometimes an option will appear in your Modules dropdown.

  • If the LTI is added to your apps, you can find it as a separate link just like other links that you have in your course such as Assignments, Announcements, etc. in the left menu.

Note: If you want to make it visible to the student:

  1. Go to Settings on the left menu.
  2. Go to Navigation at the top.
  3. Simply drag and drop the LTI from the lower tab to the upper one to make it visible to the students.
  4. Scroll down and click Save.

Now everyone in your class should be able to see that tool as an app link in the left menu.

  • If the LTI is integrated as a link within your modules, then all you need to do is to add it as an External Tool to your module/assignment.

To do that:

  1. Open your course in Canvas.
  2. Go to the module or the assignment in which you want to use that LTI.
  3. Click on the + icon on the upper right corner of that module/assignment box.
  4. From the Add drop-down, select External Tool.
  5. Find and select the LTI tool that you want to use.
  6. Click on Add Item.

Now that module or assignment is successfully connected to that specific LTI tool.

This video will walk you through the steps required to activate the LTI tool in your course:
