    We are pleased to once again offer you health insurance coverage through Aetna Student Health. Here you will find some general information about our insurance plan and instructions on how to enroll or waive the IIT insurance plan.

    (Not ALL forms of health insurance are accepted to waive the student plan)

    Returning Students

    Government mandated changes ( have caused the insurance rates for the 2014-15 academic year to increase significantly. Because of this cost increase, we understand that you may want to explore other options for health insurance. A list of the added benefits can be found below.

    The Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) terminates August 13, 2014. Coverage for the Fall semester will begin August 14, 2014. If you are a continuing student you have three options.

        1. Allow your coverage to roll over and participate in the 2014 -2015 SHIP.

        2. Enroll in insurance benefits provided through the Affordable Care Act. To  
           obtain additional information, please go online to  
           (You will need to purchase a Bronze plan or higher in order to waive
           coverage through the SHIP).
        3. Obtain coverage through an independent provider (Cigna, Aetna etc.)
           Coverage must meet the minimum requirements (minimum requirements can
           be viewed online at

    What you need to know

    • If you choose options 2 or 3, you will need to complete the electronic health insurance waiver. The waiver can be accessed on our website ( or

    • If you choose not to re-enroll in the SHIP, you will be considered as “involuntarily” losing coverage for yourself and/or your family. You will be able to apply for immediate coverage through the exchange without waiting for the open enrollment period.

    • You may contact the Student Health & Wellness Center at or Aetna Student Health directly at 800-841-3140 to obtain any documents needed. Most commonly, a Certificate of Credible Coverage (COCC) is required.

    • The Affordable Care Act ensures health plans offered both in the individual and small-group markets offer a comprehensive package of items and services, known as essential health benefits. Essential health benefits must include items and services within at least the following 10 categories: ambulatory patient services; emergency services; hospitalization; maternity and newborn care; mental health and substance use disorder services, including behavioral health treatment; prescription drugs; rehabilitative and rehabilitative services and devices; laboratory services; preventive and wellness services and chronic disease management; and pediatric services, including oral and vision care.

    You are still eligible to receive services through the Student Health and Wellness Center should you obtain coverage outside of the SHIP.

    There’s no longer a cap on prescription drugs or medical coverage (it was 500K) and now it is unlimited

    The maximum out of pocket cost was reduced to $6350 it was $7500.

    Domestic Full time Students
    It is mandatory at IIT that all full-time students and students living in residence halls have health insurance. If you have insurance of your own, you should complete the WAIVER FORM before the deadlines shown below.

    If you do not waive participation in the Student Health Insurance Plan before the deadline, you will be enrolled automatically and billed $1,159 for annual coverage or $698 for the Spring coverage. Domestic Students who are Part-Time, Co-op, RA and TA students: If you do not live in the residence halls, you are not mandated to have health insurance. If you are a part-time student and would like to enroll, please click here before the deadlines shown below.

    F1 and J1 Students:
    You are not permitted to waive the IIT Student Health Insurance.
    Your coverage will begin August 14, 2014 and continue through August 13, 2015. Insurance cards will not be mailed out. You can log on to Aetna Student Health's web site and use the print your insurance card tab or contact Aetna at 800-841-3140 to request one be mailed to you.

    If you are enrolled in the Student Health Insurance Plan, you may also purchase coverage for you eligible dependents. All eligible dependents enrolling for coverage must submit an Enrollment form to Aetna Benefit Planning Insurance Agent, Inc. You can enroll them online on Aetna Student Health's web site

Our health plan has a lot of different benefits available to those that are enrolled, like the vital savings dental and vision plan and the Student Assistance Plan (SAP) our school ID is IIT.
