Graduation Process
Illinois Tech issues diplomas (aka confers degrees) three times per year - May, August, and December. The university holds one Commencement (aka graduation) Ceremony once per year in May. The application for degree conferral and the RSVP for Commencement are separate processes and are completed independently of one another. You must complete both to ensure you receive your diploma and indicate whether or not you are planning to attend Commencement.

Graduation (Degree Conferral) Application
Due near the beginning of each semester - The exact due date depends upon the semester in which you graduate (not the term). The Degree Conferral Application can be accessed via your Illinois Tech portal.
- You should complete this form at the beginning of the semester in which you plan to finish your program.
- Semester-specific degree conferral deadlines are listed on the current semester’s Coursera academic calendar. You can expand both Term A and Term B calendars to see the degree conferral application deadline and the conferral date for the current semester.
- Those who complete the form after the stated deadline in a given semester are subject to a late fee.
Preparation for Graduation
While many students use the Coursera planner, it is not always accurate or up-to-date. For official degree audits, Illinois Tech uses Degree Works. You should use Degree Works in combination with the Annual Rolling Course Schedule found on the degree planning page to see exactly when your remaining courses will be offered.
- Check your degree requirement completion status.
- Apply for graduation via the graduation form. You must check the Academic Calendar (Graduation application form submission deadline) to estimate your graduation time.
- Coursera students will be waived the graduation fee of $200.
- Pay the late application for graduation fee of $110 if you miss the deadline for application for graduation.
- Degree conferral is a university process for confirming that a student has met all of the degree requirements and will be issued a diploma. This process occurs three times per year, in December, May, and August. For a diploma to be conferred on time, students must complete the Application for Graduation by the stated deadline.
- Commencement is Illinois Tech’s term for the graduation ceremony, which occurs once per year in May.
For a diploma to be conferred on time, you must complete the Application for Graduation by the stated deadline. If you miss the deadline, you can submit a late Application for Graduation, which may result in a late application fee. Additionally, applying late may result in a delay in processing the diploma and shipment.
If you apply for graduation but do not complete your degree requirements before the degree conferral date, you may need to reapply for graduation unless you contact the registrar to postpone degree completion.
If you are in your final term and the system does not allow you to apply, contact your advisor directly via the program support emails. They can add you to a manual list sent to Academic Affairs to ensure your application is processed before the deadline.
The process and requirements vary by program, but certifications must be submitted and processed before the degree conferral deadline for your graduate term.
Yes. You must submit your official undergraduate transcript to grad.admission@illinoistech.edu. Your degree cannot be conferred until this transcript is on file and the associated "hold" is removed from your record. It is recommended to do this as soon as you transition to degree-seeking status after completion of the PBA courses.
