Armour College of Engineering: Bringing New Ideas into the World

Since 1890 Armour College of Engineering at Illinois Tech has been educating world-class engineers who go on to make an impact in service to humanity. Our faculty are leaders and innovators in their fields, accomplishing feats such as inventing a one-of-a-kind intracortical visual prosthesis, pioneering the use of microgrids for reliable energy distribution, and developing detailed maps of the human brain. We help drive Chicago’s continued rise as a global technology and innovation hub.

Retinopathy

Developing Tools to Detect ‘Silent,’ Blindness-Causing Disease

Through a $2.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health, Professor Jennifer Kang-Mieler is developing a model to measure changes in the blood flow of the eye, including the “leakiness” of blood vessel walls, which could allow doctors to diagnose diabetic retinopathy before vision loss occurs.

“We’re taking a clinical tool that has been used for years and years and making it better and more sensitive. Our technology and method will be the only one that can tell the true blood flow changes in the eye. That’s something that a lot of imaging technology has been trying to do.”
