Withdrawal or Leave of Absence

Leave of Absence

Undergraduate degree-seeking students who wish to withdraw from the university with the intention of returning to complete their degree program may apply for a Leave of Absence. Students may apply for a Leave of Absence through the Undergraduate Academic Affairs box in the Academics tab in the MyIIT Portal:

UGAA - Withdrawal or Leave of Absence

All requests for a Leave of Absence begin with the Office of Undergraduate Academic Affairs, and must be submitted by the class withdrawal deadline, which is posted on the University Calendar. Any Leave of Absence submitted after the deadline will be effective the following semester. Exceptions can be made for students due to special circumstances. A leave of absence must last at least one semester, but cannot exceed one academic year. However it may be extended if the proper documentation is submitted. Students must contact the Office of Undergraduate Academic Affairs to schedule an exit interview before the leave is approved. In the event a student takes a leave of absence, the original scholarship will be valid for one year. Students who cease enrollment for longer than one year may have their scholarship eligibility re-evaluated. Exceptions to these policies must be approved by the Office of Financial Aid.

Students on leave will have access to their MyIIT Portal, as long as they login once every six months. If students elected IIT health insurance, they will not lose coverage for the remainder of the academic year.

Students who are on academic probation for two consecutive semesters will be considered for a Leave of Absence only after a personal interview with the staff of the Office of Undergraduate Academic Affairs.

If a student reconsiders the decision to take a Leave of Absence, written notification to the Office of Undergraduate Academic Affairs is required.

Students requesting a medical Leave of Absence must submit documentation from their health care provider.

International students must comply with additional regulations when requesting a Leave of Absence.

Any student who returns from a Leave of Absence, Withdrawal, or Dismissal/Suspension after more than one year (after three consecutive inactive semesters or longer, excluding summer) will be charged the newest tuition rate.

Withdrawal From the University

Full-time undergraduate students who wish to withdraw from the university must contact the Office of Undergraduate Academic Affairs to schedule an exit interview, which is required to begin the official withdrawal process. Students may apply for a withdrawal through the Academic Affairs channel in the MyIIT Portal. Withdrawals must be submitted by the class withdrawal deadline, which is posted on the University Calendar. Any withdrawal submitted after the deadline will be put into effect the following semester. Exceptions can be made for students due to special circumstances.

International students must comply with additional regulations when withdrawing from the university.

Any undergraduate student who is not in attendance for a semester must apply for reinstatement in the Office of Undergraduate Academic Affairs.

If a student reconsiders the decision to withdraw, written notification to the Office of Undergraduate Academic Affairs is required.

Please note that non-attendance is not an official withdrawal from the university.
